DOS PRIMOS TEQUILA RELEASES AÑEJO EXPRESSION

January 31,2023

Dos Primos Tequila, the brand started by country singer Thomas Rhett and his cousin, Jeff Worn, has introduced a new expression with its Dos Primos Tequila Añejo.

Made from 100% blue agave sourced from estates in Los Altos and the valley area of Jalisco, Mexico, and aged for at least 13 months in used bourbon barrels, the new Añejo expression is said to have notes of brown spices, dried fruit and caramel on the palate.

“Bringing Dos Primos to life initially with our Blanco tequila, then with Reposado and now Añejo, has been an incredible journey,” says Thomas Rhett. “Our Añejo is a super-smooth and flavorful tequila that can be enjoyed year-round, and we can’t wait for everyone to enjoy it with their friends and family.”

Dos Primos is distilled at Destiladora Gonzalez Lux, located just outside the city of Arandas, Mexico, in the highlands of Jalisco, by Rodolfo Gonzalez, a third-generation master distiller.

WATERFORD CREATES NEW HERITAGE WHISKY

December 21,2022

Irish Whiskey distillery Waterford has bottled its first Heritage whisky, Hunter, by resurrecting a rare barley variety from a bygone era.

First introduced in 1959, Hunter barley was acclaimed for its distinctive flavours for almost two decades before yield-enhancing varieties took preference.

Matured in a combination of 45% first-fill U.S. oak; 19% virgin U.S. oak; 21% Premium French oak; and 15% Vin Doux Naturel, Heritage: Hunter has been bottled at 50% ABV, with 10,000 bottles being released globally and 1,000 bottles in the U.S.

Working alongside partners Minch Malt and the Irish Department of Agriculture, it took Waterford more than eight years of leveraging lost breeding programs from the 1990s to discover the original flavours, Heritage: Hunter is the latest milestone in the distillery’s journey to uncover unique flavours through different agricultural techniques, terroirs, grains and seeds.

While Heritage: Hunter was developed purely for the curiosity of flavour, it also has environmental benefits. The barley was grown in soil with a high humus content, which retains water more efficiently than conventional soil and therefore protects crops against periods of drought. This protection is enhanced by the fact that Hunter barley has a larger root ball than modern varieties and better access to soil nutrients.

“Malt whisky gets its flavour, its complexity, from barley,” explained Mark Reynier, Waterford Distillery Founder and CEO. “Over time, this inherent flavour has been compromised as distilleries prioritized yield. However, because Waterford Whisky is agricultural produce, not a manufactured product, we took the step to resurrect iconic yet forgotten barley varieties. In doing so, we have uncovered remarkable insight into what whisky would have tasted like decades ago.”

“Our ultimate aim is to identify the most flavour-expressive genes from these legendary barley varieties and cross them with modern breeds, so they have more agronomic potential,” continued Reyner. “This will give us a ‘greatest hits’ of barley flavours and the ultimate variety for the most intense and naturally flavoursome whiskies.”

With Waterford Distillery’s unique TÉIREOIR code on every bottle, drinkers are given uninhibited access to every detail of its individual journey from barley to bottle.

DR. ZERO ZERO LAUNCHES AMARNO, A NON-ALCOHOLIC AMARO

December 14,2022

Released in time for the holidays and Dry January, new brand DrZeroZero has launched a non-alcoholic Amaro, AmarNo.

Said to maintain the flavour and smoothness of a traditional Amaro, the AmaroNo has been created by master “Amarologists” in Trieste, Italy, with extracts of sage, wormwood, Chinese rhubarb, quassia and orange, traditionally considered to stimulate smooth digestion and enhance energy level.

With more and more people choosing to drink Non-Alcoholic versions of traditional distillates, this expression taps into the non- Alcoholic beverage business that has seen an increase of around 33% over the past year.

While embracing the Italian obsession for flavour and the digestive properties of bitter herbs, AmarNo is an ideal complementary component to creative cocktails without adding alcohol.

HICKSON HOUSE DISTILLING RELEASES WILD ROSÉ SUMMER CUP

December 13,2022

Australian distillers Hickson House have produced an ode to the Australian summertime with the release of its Hickson Rd. Wild Rosé Summer Cup.

Produced in collaboration with Regal Rogue Vermouth, the expression is an all-Australian, hand-crafted iteration of the classic British Fruit Cup.

Barrelhouse Group co-founder Mikey Enright says, “Summer Cup is perfect for aperitivo hour to celebrate Hickson House’s upcoming first birthday and our great Australian Summer. This collaboration with my good friend Mark Ward’s Regal Rogue has been six months in the making.

“Julian (Train), Tim (Stones) and I are thrilled to introduce Summer Cup to the Hickson Rd. family,” Enright continued. “Looking forward, 2023 will see new liquids, new cocktails and a new menu as The Rocks revival gathers pace.”

Gin-based, with a dry, tropical fruit aroma, the Summer Cup embraces hints of citrus, vanilla and dried fruit, complementing the unmistakable juniper notes.

Light and refreshing, the expression provides a versatile base for a range of lower-ABV cocktails and more sophisticated serves. The liquid is also designed to inspire customers’ and bartenders’ creativity, encouraging experimentation with their favourite flavours.

After blending the Hickson Rd. Australian Dry Gin with Regal Rogue’s organic Wild Rosé Vermouth, Hickson House head distiller Tim Stones adds a variety of botanicals into the mix.

Fresh muntrie berries are steeped for five days to build the fruity character of the vermouth and enhance the distinctive, vibrant rosé colour. Additionally, he delicately blends tonka bean and bush tomato distillate from a 70L copper still to balance the liquid.
